Free DAX Explainer
Paste a DAX formula — yours, a colleague's, or one you found online — and get a plain-English explanation of what it actually computes and how.
What this does
How this works
Inheriting someone else's Power BI file — or copying a formula from a forum post — often means staring at a dense block of CALCULATEs and VARs with no idea what it's actually for. This tool reads the formula and explains what the result represents and roughly how it gets there, in a few plain sentences, without reciting a function-by-function dictionary definition.
If the formula looks incomplete or has an obvious syntax issue, it says so directly rather than inventing a confident explanation for something that wouldn't actually run in Power BI.
A worked example
Paste a year-over-year growth formula built from two CALCULATE/YEAR() variables and a DIVIDE, and this explains: it's a growth-rate measure comparing this year's total against last year's, dividing the difference by last year's total, with a safe fallback so a missing prior year shows blank instead of an error.
Questions
Does it need my actual data model?
No — just paste the formula text. It explains based on the formula itself, not your underlying tables.
Is this free?
Yes, completely free, no account or signup needed.
What if the formula has an error in it?
It'll say so plainly rather than guess at what a broken formula was "supposed" to do.
I need to write a new formula, not explain an existing one — is there a tool for that?
Yes — the DAX Formula Generator does the reverse: describe a metric in plain English, get real DAX back.
Want the whole dashboard built, not just one formula?
Upload your data, describe what you want, and get back a real, editable .pbip project today — free, no Fabric or Copilot license needed.
