Free DAX Formula Generator

Describe the metric in plain English, get back a real, correctly-structured DAX measure — proper CALCULATE/DIVIDE/SUMX usage, not a guess at syntax.

How this works

DAX has a learning curve — the difference between a measure that's technically correct and one that actually handles blanks, filter context, and division-by-zero safely isn't obvious from a quick search. This tool writes the real, structured version: DIVIDE() instead of a bare /, CALCULATE() to change filter context properly, VAR/RETURN to keep a multi-step formula readable instead of one unreadable nested line.

If you tell it your real table and column names (e.g. "Sales[Amount]"), it uses them exactly. If you don't, it picks sensible placeholder names and says so plainly in the explanation — so you always know which parts to rename before pasting it in.

A worked example

Describe: "year over year revenue growth percentage." This generates a measure with two VARs — current-year revenue and prior-year revenue, both via CALCULATE filtered on YEAR() — then returns DIVIDE() of the difference over the prior year, with a zero fallback so a year with no prior data doesn't error out instead of just showing blank.

Questions

Is the generated DAX guaranteed to work?

It's built to real DAX conventions and should be valid syntax, but it can't know your actual data model — check that table and column names match your real model before pasting it in, especially if you didn't name them in your description.

Is this free?

Yes, completely free, no account or signup needed.

Can it write more than simple measures?

It handles most common single-measure patterns well — totals, ratios, year-over-year, running totals. Very specific calculated-column or multi-measure logic may need a follow-up tweak by hand.

I have an existing DAX formula and want it explained instead — is there a tool for that?

Yes — the DAX Explainer does the reverse: paste a formula, get a plain-English explanation.
