Free Excel to CSV Converter

Upload an .xlsx or .xls file, get back a clean, properly quoted CSV — no formulas, no formatting, just the data.

How this works

Excel's own "Save As CSV" has a few sharp edges most people hit eventually: it exports using your system's regional delimiter (a semicolon instead of a comma on many non-US setups), it can mangle accented characters if the encoding isn't set just right, and it silently converts only the first sheet. This reads your workbook with a real CSV writer — always comma-delimited, always UTF-8, cell values that contain a comma or a quote mark get properly quoted so they never split across the wrong columns.

A worked example

A "Notes" column with a value like Seattle, WA or a name containing an apostrophe would break a naive comma-split converter — the comma reads as a new column. This writer wraps that value in quotes automatically, so it opens back up as one clean cell everywhere, including straight back into Excel or Power BI.

What happens to my file?

Nothing is kept. It's read once to build the CSV and never stored afterward.

Questions

Is this free?

Yes, completely free, no account or signup needed.

My workbook has multiple sheets — which one gets converted?

Just the first sheet. If you need another sheet, move it to the first position in Excel and re-upload, or convert each sheet separately.

Does it keep my formulas?

No — it exports the calculated values each formula currently shows, not the formula text. That's what a CSV needs, since CSV has no concept of formulas at all.

Is there a tool that goes the other way?

Yes — the CSV to Excel Converter turns a CSV back into a real .xlsx workbook.
